Tips on Getting Ready for Your LASIK Procedure

LASIK, or Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis, is a surgical procedure that results in improved vision for people who rely on contact lenses and eyeglasses for their daily tasks. If you are a LASIK eye surgery candidate, a few preparatory steps can help improve your recovery rate. In today’s post, local eye doctor Joel H McGahen OD shares things you should know in preparation for your upcoming LASIK procedure.

Keep Yourself Hydrated

Dry eye is a common side effect of LASIK after surgery. When this happens, your tear ducts will be working more to maintain lubrication in your eyes. You will need to make up for the moisture loss by increasing your water intake a few days before your scheduled procedure. The World Health Organization recommends drinking at least half a gallon of water a day and a full gallon for people with active lifestyles. Yours should be at least three-quarters of a gallon.

Find Someone Who Will Assist You During Recovery

People who have had eye dilation tests are advised not to do tasks that are dependent on vision, such as driving. Eye dilation tests are performed for diagnosing glaucoma and other types of eye disease, and it involves the use of special eye drops that prolongs eye dilation. After the test, the eyes will stay dilated for about 4 to 6 hours, which means driving or wearing contact lenses won’t be ideal.

Recovering from LASIK surgery is basically the same: the eyes will be sensitive after the procedure. Vision will be blurry or hazy for a few days as eyes adjust. You will also be wearing a shield over your eyes during this period. Make it a point to have someone assist you during recovery: someone who can help you with tasks like cooking, bathing, or, if needed, drive you around.

Prepare Comfortable Clothing

It may sound like an insignificant thing, but you’ll want to wear comfortable clothing during your LASIK procedure. You will be awake during the surgery—which takes less than an hour total—and will be required to keep as still as you can. Comfortable clothing can help you settle in and stay still.
