Eye Prescriptions: Is It Actually Time to Update Yours?

Eyeglasses or contact lenses offer a simple and effective way to correct vision problems, such as myopia and hyperopia. With the right prescription, they can give you many years of clear and healthy vision–but there may come a time when you might need to update them. Joel H McGahen OD, the trusted eye doctor in the area, shares how you can tell.

1. You have blurry vision. Whether your vision is getting blurry around the edges or just plain blurry, then you should promptly schedule an eye exam with your local optometrist. This symptom can occur in one or both eyes, and usually signals a serious change in vision. Aside from the necessary prescription update, further tests may be required to rule out bigger eye problems, such as cataracts.

2. You tend to squint more often. This usually indicates that you’re not seeing clearly and properly. In fact, constant squinting can put extra strain on your eyes, worsening your vision problems. If you find yourself squinting whenever you read or spend time in front of the computer, you probably need to have your prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses updated.

3. Your eyes are sensitive to light. You definitely need an update to your eye prescription if the sun (or even indoor lighting) is making you squint or hurt your eyes. Light sensitivity usually indicates excessive eye strain, or even an infection or disorder. You’ll only know for sure once you visit your optometrist.

4. You’re experiencing recurring headaches. Those who are nearsighted may experience headaches in front of their head, or right over the eyebrow. People who are farsighted may have them after looking at things closely for long periods.

Changes in your vision are not always abrupt. That’s why you should try to visit your premier low vision specialist, Joel H McGahen OD, every few years for a complete eye exam.
