Winter Eye Care Tips for You and Your Family

Winter’s low temperatures and cold breeze aren’t exactly conducive to your eye comfort. They may cause your tears to dry up easily, creating discomfort in your eyes. In today’s post, Dr. Joel H. McGahen, O.D., your trusted optometrist, shares some tips to keep your eyes in great shape this season.

Use a Humidifier

The cold months usually mean additional work for your home’s heating system. While using the HVAC can make the room cozy, it can also reduce indoor air moisture and cause dry eyes. Using a humidifier can neutralize these effects and prevent visual discomfort.

Drink Lots of Fluids

Colder temperatures produce drier air that may cause your tears to evaporate rapidly. An effective way to prevent dry eyes is to stay hydrated by drinking lots of fluids. Your eye doctor suggests taking at least eight glasses of water daily to keep your eyes moisturized. We may also prescribe artificial tears.

Prepare Seafood Dishes

Holiday celebrations are not complete without sumptuous dishes. Why not prepare something healthy, like tuna and other coldwater fish? They are rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids that help maintain the lubrication in your eyes.

Use Sunglasses and Hats

You may not know it, but the sun’s rays reflect off the snow and enter your eyes. Wearing eyeglasses with UV-protective coatings is a great way to protect your eyes this time of the year.

Most importantly, visit your eye care specialist for an eye exam. Doing so is one of the best ways to keep your eyes in great condition, no matter the season.
