What Is Optos Retinal Imaging?

Getting regular eye exams from your eye doctor or optometrist is the best way to detect early signs of vision problems and to prevent other vision-related illnesses. Unfortunately, while eye exams are necessary, they can be a little bit uncomfortable. Sitting there while your doctor examines your eyes closely can be tiring and, should any change occur in your dilation levels in real time, assessments can be jeopardized and made inaccurate.

Thankfully, modern eye exam technology now has Optos Retinal Imaging. Let our eye care specialists at Joel H McGahen OD answer any questions you may have about the process and explain the many advantages of using Optos for your next scheduled eye exam.

What Is Optos?

“Take a picture. It’ll last longer.” It may sound funny but this, in a nutshell, is the simplest way your optometrist can explain the concept behind Optos Retinal Imaging. Optos creates what is called an “optomap.” An optomap is a high-resolution ultra-wide field image of your retinas, a high-def photograph of your eyes, so to speak. Your eye doctor can then use this image instead of your eyes for a more in-depth examination.

How Does Optos Work?

Optos takes pictures one eye at a time. You look into a device assisted by a doctor. There is a short flash of bright light and then it’s done. This flash is perhaps the most uncomfortable part of the whole process, which takes less than one second to complete. Compared to traditional retinal imaging, Optos can capture up 65% more of your retina.

Who Can Undergo Optos Imaging?

Optos is safe, fast and effective. It can be used on children and adults, whether they wear eyeglasses or not. In fact, because it’s more comfortable than other methods of retinal imaging, it’s the best way to conduct an eye exam for very young children.
