Contact lenses and eyeglasses are two of the most common options for vision correction. When worn properly, you shouldn’t experience issues wearing them. However, there are instances where patients feel discomfort while wearing contacts.

Dry Eye – Dry eye sufferers may not have sufficient quality tears to keep the eyes nourished and lubricated. This eye condition may cause discomfort to contact lens wearers. It can be a symptom of an underlying medical condition or acquired with risk factors like smoking, computer use or caffeine. Dry eye can also be a side effect of taking certain medications.
Improper Fit – Contact lenses should be made to fit your eyes’ size and shape. Your eye doctor will take various measurements to ensure your lenses properly fit your eyes.
Allergens – Large amounts of allergens such as dust, pollen or dander can irritate your eyes. They can also get stuck to the surface of your lenses and cause discomfort.
Underlying Condition – Immediately contact an eye specialist if your eyes become red, swollen or experience discharge. An infection or an underlying disease may be causing these symptoms. Also, you shouldn’t wear contacts if you have an eye infection or on certain topical eye medications.
When experiencing discomfort, the first thing you should do is remove your contacts. Don’t attempt to put it back if it has damage. Place them inside their case and get in touch with your eye doctor. If after removing your lenses, the problem goes away, check if they have a foreign body on them. Clean your lenses and then reinsert them. After reinsertion, if you begin feeling discomfort again, immediately remove your contacts and consult your eye specialist.
