Overcoming Dry Eye Syndrome and Diabetes

Modern studies have revealed a strong correlation between dry eye syndrome and diabetes. Not many are aware of the relationship between the two conditions, so it helps to understand how they can be treated before they affect your vision and health over time. Local eyeglasses specialist Joel H McGahen OD shares their insight:

How Are They Correlated?

Diabetes mainly affects the nervous system and causes a decreased sensation. That means when a person has diabetes, they may often experience decreased sensation throughout their body, especially in their hands and feet. The loss of sensation often reaches the corneal nerve (especially for those with long-term diabetes) and reduces its density, impairing the lacrimal gland. The lacrimal gland is mainly responsible for diluting tears, so when it gets affected, it results in dry eye syndrome.

Getting the Right Treatment

If you think you constantly have dry eyes but are not sure whether it indicates a sign of diabetes, you need to get yourself checked by a trusted optometrist as soon as possible. Only they can determine through a comprehensive eye exam whether you’re experiencing certain health conditions and diseases. Other indications of diabetes include corneal ulceration, which is due to the eyes not having a normal tear film protecting it and resulting in increased insensitivity of the cornea.

One of the most commonly recommended treatments against dry eye syndrome and diabetes is the use of prescribed ocular lubricants such as topical insulin. Environmental and lifestyle changes are also often recommended. Changes can be as simple as taking hot compresses and using humidifiers as well as reducing your television and device usage to keep your eyes well-rested.
