Keeping Your Eyes Healthy

With the youngest of the baby boomers turning 65 by 2029, it’s expected that there may be a significant increase in the number of individuals with visual impairment or vision loss. This is why your trusted eye doctor, Dr. Joel H. McGahen, OD, emphasizes the need to take care of your eyes as early as now. As May marks Healthy Vision Month, here are tips on maintaining your eye health.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Eating nutritious foods can help keep your eyes in great shape. Some good examples are leafy greens, coldwater fish and fresh fruits. They are loaded with eye-friendly vitamins and minerals that your eyes need to maintain their functions. Exercising regularly ensures proper blood flow to your eyes, as well. We also advise drinking plenty of water daily for your visual comfort.

Have Regular Eye Exams

One of the best things you can do for your eyes is to have them checked regularly by your optometrist. This way, we can easily detect irregularities that may cause vision problems. The sooner we diagnose these underlying eye conditions, the better chances we have of maintaining your eyesight.

Use Sunglasses When Going Outdoors

Sunglasses are not only fashionable, but they are also a reliable tool when it comes to protecting your eyes. They block harmful UV rays, lowering your risk of having corneal sunburns, cataracts, and other eye conditions. When buying a pair, choose one that can filter both UVA and UVB rays.

Be Aware of Eye Problems in Your Family

Many eye conditions are inherited. If you have a parent, sibling or other relatives who are farsighted, for example, this increases your risk of needing contact lenses or eyeglasses later on as well. Knowing this piece of information can serve as our guide when creating your eye care plan.
