How to Prevent Eye Injuries at Home

Many of us see our homes as a sanctuary and a place of refuge. However, the home is also a common site of eye injuries. The good news is that while accidents cannot be completely avoided, they can be prevented.

In observance of Home Eye Safety Month, your optometrist at Joel H McGahen lists a few tips and ways to prevent eye injuries sustained at home or when performing house work.

Eye Injury Risks Around the Home

While the home is a relatively safe space, there are certain products that can present risks for eye injuries. These products include but aren’t limited to cleaning solutions, such as bleach and air fresheners. These household products aren’t necessarily hazardous, but they do pose some threats when used improperly or accidentally spilled on or near the eye area.

House Work Risks

There are also certain home maintenance activities that can cause eye injuries. Even something as simple as cooking can splatter hot oil or grease into your eyes. You also have to be careful when mowing your lawn, as any item left on the yard can become projectile once the motorized blades come in contact with it. It’s imperative that you have a trusted eye doctor or eye care center nearby should any of these activities cause an eye injury.

Preventing Eye Injury

Around 90% of eye injuries sustained at home can be prevented by wearing protective eye gear. Make sure you have at least one quality-tested pair at home available for use any time. Turn nozzles away from you before spraying. Secure rugs, rails and sharp corners to minimize slips and falls. Always read the labels before using any chemicals around the home.
