Ensuring Eye Protection This UV Safety Month

The month of July is UV Safety Month, and for good reason. Summer is upon us, and today is a great time to spread awareness about the effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays to our overall health. UV radiation causes skin cancer, but it can also result in vision-related problems, especially if you don’t protect your eyes.

Dr. Joel H. McGahen OD, your trusted eye doctor, discusses the effects of UV rays on the eyes and ways you can protect your eyesight against them.

UV Exposure and the Eyes

UV rays are everywhere, even when the sun is not overhead. In fact, it can penetrate through clouds. It is worth noting that ultraviolet radiation comes in three types: UV-A, UV-B and UV-C. The UV-C type is the least harmful as it gets absorbed by the ozone layer. UV-A and UV-B, however, reach us on Earth and can cause damage to the eyes.

With many people enjoying the beach and the outdoors this time of the year, every optometrist and eye medical doctor are cautioning the public about the effects of too much exposure to UV light. Each time we are out in the sun without protection, the risk of contracting eye conditions such as photokeratitis (sunburn of the eyes), severe corneal damage, cataracts, glaucoma and ocular melanoma increases.

Helpful Eye Protection Tips

Fortunately, there are ways we can protect our eyes from the effects of UV rays. Time your trips to the lake or beach when the sun is not as strong. Once you are out and the sun is shining, consider staying in shaded areas. Also, be sure to equip yourself with an umbrella, hat or a pair of sunglasses for added protection.

Of course, we urge you to undergo regular checkups with your eye doctor. Not only will this ensure protection for your eyesight, but you can always have an accurate prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses.
