Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelids and often occurs when tiny oil glands located near the eyelashes’ base become clogged, leading to irritated and red eyes. Aside from that, it can also cause clumping and stickiness around the eyelashes. Symptoms of blepharitis include watery and red eyes, a stinging sensation, greasy and itchy eyelids, flaking of the skin around the eyes, amongst other symptoms. While the exact cause of blepharitis isn’t clear, there are certain factors that can lead to it, such as bacterial infection, malfunctioning oil glands, rosacea, allergies, eyelash mites or seborrheic dermatitis. Most people often ask if blepharitis goes away on its own and the answer is not exactly. There are instances when the symptoms will come and go with periods of remission followed by exacerbations. In other words, blepharitis is a recurring problem that doesn’t have an exact cure. And this can be a problem as blepharitis can play host to a load of eye problems.

Eyelid Problems
Long-term blepharitis may cause some scarring to occur on your eyelids. It can even cause your eyelid edges to turn inward or outward.
Eyelash Problems
Blepharitis can also cause your eyelashes to either fall out or grow in an abnormal manner.
Excess Tearing or Dry Eyes
Blepharitis can occur due to a malfunctioning oil gland in your eye, causing abnormal oily secretions and other debris shed from the eyelids, like flaking similar to dandruff and can accumulate in your tear film. This can interfere in the healthy lubrication of your eyelids and cause symptoms of dry eyes or excess tearing.
Sty
Blepharitis can also cause sty, an infection often characterized by a painful lump on the edge of your eyelid.
Cornea Injury
The constant irritation of inflamed eyelids or misdirected eyelids caused by blepharitis can lead to a sore developing on your cornea. This insufficient tearing can then cause corneal infection and damage your vision.
