6 New Year’s Resolutions for Better Eye Health

The new year is a fresh start, a chance to make meaningful changes. Caring for your eyes should be at the top of your list of resolutions. After all, healthy vision can dramatically improve your quality of life. From regular eye exams to limiting screen time, there are various ways to prioritize your eye health this year.

1. Schedule Comprehensive Eye Exams

Sight is a gift, often taken for granted until compromised. Start the year right by scheduling an appointment with an optometrist. Regular comprehensive eye exams are crucial in identifying potential eye problems, such as glaucoma or cataracts, early when they are easiest to treat.

2. Eat a Balanced and Nutritious Diet for Healthy Eyes

A nutritious diet plays a significant role in maintaining good eye health. Foods rich in vitamins A, C and E, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc and lutein can keep age-related vision problems, such as macular degeneration and cataracts, at bay. Incorporate green leafy vegetables, oily fish, eggs, nuts, beans, citrus fruits and oysters in your diet. Remember, what’s beneficial for the body is often beneficial for your eyes.

3. Quit Smoking

Chronic exposure to tobacco smoke can lead to the development of cataracts and macular degeneration, two of the leading causes of vision loss. Smoking can also lead to dry eyes, as it impacts the eye’s tear film. There are many resources available to help with smoking cessation. Your eye doctor can also provide guidance to help you on your journey to quit smoking.

4. Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water can prevent dry eyes and help maintain the healthy production of tears, keeping your eyes moist and comfortable. This is especially crucial in dry climates or during winter when heaters can dry out the air in your indoor environment. Incorporating hydrating foods like cucumbers, watermelon and oranges into your diet can also contribute to maintaining your eye hydration.

5. Limit Screen Time

Extended exposure to digital screens can cause digital eye strain, leading to symptoms like dry eyes, blurred vision and headaches. Aim to follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. Adjusting screen brightness and using blue light filtering glasses can also reduce the impact of screen time on your eyes. Consider setting screen time limits on your devices and making time for offline activities to give your eyes a much-needed break.

6. Use Protective Eyewear

Wearing protective eyewear is another critical aspect of maintaining good eye health. If your job or hobbies involve activities that could harm your eyes, such as construction work, woodwork or sports, always wear safety glasses or goggles. Also, remember to wear sunglasses that block out 99% to 100% of UVA and UVB radiation. Protective eyewear is a simple yet effective way to prevent eye injuries and protect your vision.
