3 Great Tips for Keeping Your Aging Eyes Healthy

As we get older, our vision might be one of the first senses that we notice changing. Unfortunately, vision problems such as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and general age-related macular degeneration become more common as we get on in years. With Healthy Aging Month now in full swing, we look at a few ways to keep our aging eyes healthy. Here are a few tips from a trusted eye doctor

1. Eat a Healthy Diet

According to the American Academy of Opthalmology, one of the most effective ways of combating bad vision as we age is to keep up a healthy diet. Try to include a lot of orange foods, like carrots, sweet potatoes, apricots and cantaloupes to preserve your vision.

2. Wear Protection

No matter what age we are, too much exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays is never a good thing. As we get older, it becomes doubly important that we guard our eyes against the harshness of the sun. Always wear sunglasses when you are out in the sun or talk to your optometrist about getting eyeglasses that offer 100 percent UV protection.

3. Reduce Screen Time

Constantly staring at our phone, TV or computer screen can cause a lot of eye strain. To minimize this, try to give your eyes a break during the day. One nifty trick to keep eye strain in check is to practice the 20-20-20 rule: take a 20-second break every 20 minutes and look at something else that is at least 20 feet away.
